Many church chair distributors today are offering partially built chairs as a more “economical” option for churches on a budget. The idea is that the manufacturer saves money by not paying for the labor to finish the final process of the building the chair and passes the savings on to the consumer. This ideas works great for residential applications such as the 8 drawer dresser you buy from Ikea that comes in a 6 inch tall box full of pieces. However on furniture that is going to be used several times a week and stacked up and moved possibly as often, it’s better to have church chairs that are completed by the manufacturer. At Bertolini for instance, they use a new technology called a bosscrew. This unique screw in notched on the sides and actually tightens over time as opposed to standards screws that will loosen with use. You can also be sure that each chair will be put together properly with the backs aligned perfectly to give a nice line down the aisles on Sunday morning. So yes it may cost slightly more to purchase your church chairs fully assembled but in the long run, between to cost of time in assembling hundreds of chairs and re-tightening screws over time, it is well worth the expense.

Many churches today utilize stack-able seating in their sanctuaries. What many churches don’t realize when they are in the market for seating is the functionality of stack-able seating. While churches will understand how the seats will look on Sunday morning when they’re all set up and hopefully full of people, most don’t take advantage of the mobility factor of church chairs. Having the ability to bring in fewer chairs for smaller meetings where more open space may be needed, the youth groups game night for instance, or having extra seating stored for those Sundays when the church is filled beyond capacity. These instances, along with the ability to reset the main sanctuary for special events or round table small groups require stacking church chairs that are well built and able to endure being moved, stacked and unstacked multiple times during the week.

I’ve mentioned in earlier articles the importance of security in the church buildings. Especially during service times when people are walking around throughout the campus. Unfortunately people can find ways to steal things that most of us wouldn’t think of securing. A case in point is a church in Tacoma Washington. On a recent Friday night while they were setting up their church chairs for a men’s breakfast the following morning they discovered that their copper piping had been stolen. Not the piping from a church organ, no, these were the plumbing pipes. With the extreme rise in copper of the the last few years many abandoned homes and commercial buildings have been stripped of their piping, wiring and any copper fixtures. Unfortunately people can see a church building left empty during the week as a target. In some buildings it’s just a matter of getting into the crawl space under the building and pulling out all the pipes. The only preventative measures can be expensive. A video surveillance system or a night watchman are a couple of options. Walking the property on a regular basis and looking for vulnerable entrance points are also a good idea.

With the economy the way it is today raising funds for a new church project such as chairs can be daunting. There are several ways raise money to purchase specific items that a church needs to operate. For the sake of these articles we will use church chairs as an example of a large purchase that most if not all churches need to raise funds for.

One of the best ways I’ve seen to raise funds is by having each individual in the church “buy” their own chair. It woks something like this: The church board decides which church chairs would best suit the churches needs and presents them to the congregation. Most chair manufacturers are happy to send sample chairs to potential buyers. Then the price of each chair along with a picture and descriptions are handed out to each attender and everyone is asked to donate that amount. In almost all cases this works very well. Asking for $35.00 for a fundraiser is much more palatable to people than presenting a bill of $17,500 for 500 chairs. While some people in the congregation won’t be able to afford the participate there are always many others who with buy more that just one.

Not that many years ago the only seating option for churches was the pew. Hard wooden surfaces with straight backs. Granted you could pack more people into a room by squeezing them together, but sitting for long periods was uncomfortable to say the least. Today there are many church chair options to choose from. There are luxurious choices that are beautifully designed to match any interior and supply hours of seated comfort, as well as more economical choices the are still attractive by much more affordable. The comfort can come from not only cushioning but also other design elements such as the tilt of the back or the depth of the seat. With so many options available today it’s easy to find seating that will work with almost any budget and work in any church building.

Over the centuries church chair design has changed dramatically. The pews of the past were constructed of wood, had no padding and were designed to keep the congregation sitting up straight and at attention. There was almost a suffering quality about the design. The church chairs of today are much different. With beautiful fabrics and plenty of padding they are designed to be used for long periods of time in comfort. Maybe too much comfort sometimes. I’m sure the comfort assists in the incidents of nodding off during service. The benefits outweigh the sleepy quality however. With the added comfort, church attendance it up and pastors can preach for longer periods of time without having to be concerned with the comfort of their congregation. The trick is to design chairs that are as comfortable as possible without putting the congregation to sleep with minutes of sitting down.

There are churches in Texas being set aflame by arsonists and churches in Jackson Mississippi being burglarized at an alarming rate. Any time a church is targeted for a crime it’s alarming but the frequency I’ve been reading about lately is more so. As church leaders we never want to believe that someone would come in and steal what was so generously given or worse yet set the whole church ablaze. Unfortunately while we sit in our church chairs on Sunday morning we may feel safe but we still have to leave them and go out into the world the rest of the week. We just don’t want to feel the ugliness of this world in our sanctuaries.
