Many churches in America have internet sites that are used to educate people who are searching for a new church as well as inform church attenders what’s going on. I’ve notice lately that many church websites also have a “Donate” button on their website. While I’m sure this could be a good thing for a mega church that may have a hard time passing a offering basket to 2ooo people on Sunday morning, for smaller churches I see no reason for it. It’s unlikely that the web site is offering enough teaching and community involvement to justify being fed from the Word. Most attempts to accept money over the internet make it appear that the main focus of the church is to gain funds. My favorite representation of this is the website for a church in Rancho Cucamonga, CA in which the only button that fully works properly is the “Donate” button. All the other pages have been “Coming Soon” for the last year or so. I appreciate the idea of going to where people are and making it convenient for them to give. Maybe they give online when they pay their bills online. I just think that people would be better served and receive more if they were encouraged to be in their church chairs on Sunday morning instead of surfing the web and paying their dues.
